- Apostille

Apostille Certification or Authentication of Official Seals is a certification by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Embassy or Consulate in Japan. The Official Documents issued by the Public Office of Japan can not be recognized correctly by the Foreign Organization, so it is required these certification or authentication.


How to be certified

(1) Prepare the Documents

Prepare the Public Documents like Family Register, or Private Documents like Contract, Power of Attorney.

* Even if the document is Public, if it has been translated into onother language , it will be a Private Document.

  • If it is the Public Documents, go to next.
  • If it is the Private Documents, it must be authenticated by the Public Notary and certified the Public Notary Seal by Legal Affairs Bureau.

Prepare the Public Documents.

(2) Check the destination country

Check whether the country to which you are submitting the document is a member of the Hague Convention or not.

  • If the country is a signatory to the Hague Convention, get the Apostille Certification.
  • If the country is not a member of the Hague Convention, get the Authentication of Official Seals and Certification of Embassy or Consulate in Japan.
(3) Apostille Certification or Authentication of Official Seals

Take the (1)Documents to the Foreign Affairs Office, and get the certificate of Apostille or Authentication of Official Seals.

  • If the required documents is the Apostille, the procedure is complete.
  • If the Authentication of Official Seals is necessary, go to next.

(4) The Ambassador Authentication

Get the Authentication by taking (3)Documents to the Embassy or Consulate in Japan.
